Blogging Inspiration

I know we've talked a lot about finding inspiration for our WIPs and future WIPs but I haven't talked all that much about finding inspiration for blog posts.

I know the whole reason Jaime and Erin started What's Up Wednesday is because they too were finding it increasingly difficult to find topics to write about regularly on their blogs.

So I would love to know, where do you find your inspiration? Do you get it from other blogs? From the news? From google searches? Or does it just come to you out of thin air?

  1. In answer to your question: yes! All of the above. I think what helps is defining what you want to get out of your blog. Are you a subject matter expert setting out to teach? Or are you sharing your life in the hope of building connections with like-minded people? If your blog is about writing, what's your angle? Literary Agent blogs tend to focus on the nuts-and-bolts of the industry, the agent's clients, querying, etc. Author blogs tend to be about their work, the craft of writing, books, etc.

As you know, my blog has three core foci (okay, focuses--when you've done Latin, it's hard to shake!): writing, reading, and theology. I tend to favor article ideas that are in one of those three. However, I will also discuss things of interest to me (e.g., music, and Doctor Who). For those who share my interests, those can be discussion points. For those that don't share these interests, they give some insight into who I am.

So, I would suggest you take a step back and ask: Why am I blogging? What do I hope to achieve? There is no wrong answer to this. If your answer is "Because I'm lonely and I want lots of friends," that's fine. If your answer is "Because I'm a complete genius, and I want the world to know it," that's also fine. Whatever your answer, that should help you decide what you want to write about, and hopefully trigger ideas for articles.

    I hope that helps! :)
